Worth Noting News Spring 07

It is with a somber heart that we say fare well to a friend and promoter of slackline and Slackline Brothers since our humble beginings. Mr. Tobi Blank. Tobi passed away over the weekend .

He was the biggest kid of all! Conducting business from his slackline, at times flinging or falling on his cell phone! Giving those of us at the other end a most interesting audio experince!

He too could be found elbowing his way through the bivi of kids at our lines at Teva Mountain Games, Ford Adventure Weekend, and at the Phoenix Boulder Blast. Often requesting us to set up more lines so he could have his turn all the time! And thus introducing slackline to these and other outdoor events.

Thank you Tobi for your mentoring friendship and passion for slackline. We wont forget you.

Our hearts go out to all his family and close friends who will miss him most.

Victory for Slackliners at Muscle Beach

I just received a call from SM Open Space Management. She said that they met with the City Attorney and Risk Management on Monday, and they determined that "because we had obtained permission to to do this before, and there had been so few injuries, we should be allowed to continue to set up lines."

However, there are 3 caveats which we must follow if we want to KEEP our permission. She asked that I get the word out on these points:

1) Don't leave your lines unattended, where some tourist may run into it, or try it without a spot and hurt themselves.
2) Remove them at the end of the day.
3) Slacklines and ropes are the ONLY attachment we have permission for. NO SILKS or other circus equipment may be set up without additional permission.

Pretty mellow caveats, no? And, just in time for the first long daylight-savings Sunday of the year. Woo-hoo!

Hard & Cold 67 Foot Highline AtO uray.

The 12th annual Ouray Ice Festival was a feast for the senses!

The boys laid it all out on the line yet again setting up a 67 foot long and, 150+/- high Highline at the Ouray Ice festival.

It was hard and cold! Larry and Dylan rigged for a day, and then at sun down on saturday Damian and Dylan fought hard for it. Taming this super tight( tightened 17% according to Dylan) double, theaded with a rope beast.

"This is hard" the boys kept saying. The weather conditions made it specially challenging. Snow falling in your face, frozen feet, stepping off and then hearing the river below and getting even more distracted!
The beautiful blue ice cascade sculptures frozen in time provided a magical back drop for this team's efforts. Led by Larry Harpe, the goal was acomplished! To share the love and craft of slackline.

The Cali contingent had a good showing with Auntie, DamianC showing strong skills and mastery and, Todd and the boys from Rockreation.

Colorado well represented with slackinjacklyn, Masonjar and Brian Gallant who continue to up the ante and stepped off into the frozen void too. Good effort!

And we made new friends. BIG slacker Love props to Eric and Hanna from Durango and all the go for it! folks that came to the festival and participated.

Slackline Ban Threat at Muscle Beach. By Clark

During lunch today I had a line up on the exercise equipment, as did another guy, I think his name is Michael, he works as a rigger for the studios. Beside the point. A sergeant with the Santa Monica Police drove up in a truck and told us that slacklining was no longer permitted on the exercise equipment (the pull bars, traveling rings, etc) which are city property. He said a complaint had been filed and someone had threatened to sue the city.

I wondered whether there were any teeth behind this ban. There is in fact a municipal ordinance which prohibits "hanging" on city equipment unless authorized by the city. A related clause says fines are not to exceed $500 or 6 months in jail.

I've been told not set up slacklines in the Santa Monica parks. I thought we were safe down on the beach. I think it was "Stuntman" Bob who told me that an engineer from the county had inspected a slackline setup and said he didn't have any problem with it. The city lists Muscle Beach as one of their beach parks.

Years ago I met with officials about putting up slacklines without getting hassled by the police. The head of Parks & Recreation actually met us AT the beach, along with 2 safety/insurance experts, inspected the rig, (one of them even kicked off his shoes and tried it!) and determined that it was safe. They said they'd notify the police that lines were officially allowed.

Now, in the last week, slackliners have been busted TWICE for setting up. I sent off a letter to Parks & Rec, and received the reply pasted below.

We're going to see what we can do to get this changed, but if we ignore it and set up anyway, we run the risk of having ALL the equipment shut down. Maybe that's not a huge deal to those of you that exclusively slackline, but we muscle beach acrobats still remember the horror of a giant chain running through all the rings, locked off so that we couldn't swing. For our own safety of course... We'd prefer not to repeat that.

So, the larger question is, what was this accident?! Does anybody here know? It would help us prepare our "case" against SM if we had that information. Please email me at jesscail (at) yahoo (dot) com, or join our forum at ringflyers.com and post the info.

Dear Ms. Cail,

Thanks for your email. A few weeks ago, there was an accident at Muscle Beach caused by an individual who attached lines to one of the apparatus. As a result, the City Attorney’s office and the City’s Risk Manager have directed staff to remove all attachments to equipment at Muscle Beach and to prohibit any attachments in the future.

While we did meet two years ago to look at the slackrope and at that time did consider it to be permissible, we have been advised that no attachment to equipment can be permitted going forward. The City must ensure, to the best of its ability, the safety of the Muscle Beach area. Alteration or attachment to individual apparatus is not how the equipment was intended to be used and has resulted in an accident.

I know this is unwelcome news but it is a necessity to ensure safe use of the equipment.
