While I think you nailed the spirit of that law on the head - to prevent people from tying ropes, etc around trees and LEAVING them there (which will almost invariably kill the tree, perhaps years later) - they've written the law to encompass attaching anything and everything to the tree for any amount of time.
This is a situation where I think strict ethics are our best friend. In this case, it means not rigging in public areas. A demonstration of such ethic with a strong presentation to the powers-that-be that there is no harm caused to the tree and that strict leave-no-trace standards are adhered to are your best shot. In the meantime, it's probably best to find some private property to slack on (legally of course; no trespassing!), or to travel out of the county.
